A fire caused by a burst gas pipe spread to some homes and sent a fireball soaring into the sky outside Malaysia’s largest city Tuesday, injuring more than 100 people.
The towering inferno near a gas station in Putra Heights outside Kuala Lumpur was visible for miles and lasted for some hours. It happened during a public holiday as Muslims, who are the majority in Malaysia, celebrate the second day of Eid.
According to national oil company Petronas, the fire started at one of its gas pipelines at 8:10 a.m. and the affected pipeline was later isolated. Disaster management officials said shutting the valves will eventually snuff out the fire.
The flames, 20 stories high at one point, were small enough for firefighters to approach around 2:45 p.m., the Selangor state fire department told the Star newspaper.
At least 49 houses were damaged and 112 people were injured, with 63 sent to the hospital due to burns, breathing difficulties and other injuries, Selangor Deputy Police Chief Mohamad Zaini Abu Hassan was quoted by national Bernama news agency as saying.
According to Selangor Chief Minister Amirudin Shari, the fire department evacuated nearby homes as a safety measure and the residents will be placed in mosques nearby until the situation is under control.
Videos and pictures of the fireball went viral on social media, with some residents saying they felt a strong tremor with the doors and windows of their homes shaking.
Lee Weng Ken, who suffered burns to his left leg, said he was in sh0ck when the ceiling of his house collapsed and crushed his vehicle parked in the compound of the house.
“I rushed out of my house but fell and suffered burns due to the heat from the blaze near my house,” he told Bernama.
Another victim who only wanted to be known as Andy, told Bernama he ran out of his home with his children when they felt tremors and saw the raging fire about 100 meters (328 feet) away.
“I could only take the car out. My 18-year-old daughter injured her foot when she fell while climbing the fence due to the heat, he said.
Petronas said three gas stations were closed as a precaution, though they weren’t affected, and investigations are still underway.

Story 1
While babysitting for my sister, I noticed the baby monitor suddenly light up at 3 a.m. I checked, but the baby was sound asleep. Then, a voice whispered through the speaker: “He’s not okay.”
Panic set in as I called my sister. Her reaction made my blood run cold.
“Grab my son and run to the car! Lock the doors and call 911!” she yelled.
She admitted she’d been hearing strange noises through the monitor too, and it had been unsettling her for days. As we spoke, I caught a glimpse of a shadow moving outside my nephew’s bedroom window. My breath hitched when I noticed the window was open—a window we always kept closed.
I didn’t waste another second. I grabbed my nephew and bolted to the car. The police arrived and searched the area but found nothing. They later told us that the baby monitor model we had was known for picking up “strange sounds,” with several similar complaints reported.
We replaced the monitor, and the noises stopped. But I know what I saw. That shadow. That open window. The memory still sends shivers down my spine.
Story 2
As a kid, I visited a theme park and came across a man who looked exactly like me. He warned me to be careful with my money that day.
At nine years old, I was drawing with my older sister when we heard piano music drifting from upstairs. The eerie part? No one else was home.
We recognized the tune—it was Für Elise.
Slowly, we made our way up the stairs. Midway, the music stopped abruptly… then resumed after two seconds. As we reached the doorway, the melody ceased entirely.
I frequently had recurring dreams at my sister’s house about a little girl with dark hair and pale skin. She always told me she stayed there because my sister reminded her of her mother.
Cora spent the morning wrapped in happiness, surprising even herself with how cheerful she felt. Sitting in the living room, she checked off tasks from her to-do list for the evening, blushing as she imagined how delighted Eric would be with the Valentine’s Day surprise she had planned for him.
Cora had met Eric at a business conference in Texas, and after only a few dates, they tied the knot. Two years later, they welcomed triplets into their lives.
However, as time passed, tensions arose. Cora became the primary caregiver for their children while Eric took on the role of the family’s sole provider.
This shift meant they hadn’t taken a vacation or dined at a fine restaurant in years, not even on special occasions.
For Valentine’s Day, Cora wore a red dress that Eric had given her on their first wedding anniversary. Though it was slightly outdated, it held sentimental value and spared unnecessary expenses, making it perfect for the occasion.

As the evening approached and Eric’s arrival neared, she carefully set the table.
A heart-shaped red velvet cheesecake—his favorite—sat at the center, accompanied by a bottle of wine and an assortment of home-cooked dishes. Next to his plate, she placed a neatly wrapped gift box, excited for him to open it.
Nearly half an hour later, the doorbell rang. Eric was home.
“Happy Valentine’s Day, honey!” she greeted with a warm smile.
But Eric’s reaction wasn’t what she expected. His face twisted in anger.
“What is all this, Cora? Are we some foolish teenagers?” he snapped.
Taken aback, she gently reassured him, “Oh, Eric! Relax! I didn’t go overboard. The ingredients were a bit pricey, but not by much.” She guided him to the table. “Please, sit down and try the food?”

But Eric wasn’t having it. He was furious.
“Do you even think? The babies—I just put them to sleep thirty minutes ago, and now you’ve woken them up!”
Then, his eyes landed on the small gift box. He scoffed, picked it up, and tossed it onto the floor.
“A gift? Do I look like a child who’d be impressed by this? And have you seen the kitchen? It’s a mess because you were too busy making this nonsense instead of handling the house!”
Cora’s temper flared. She stormed out of the room.
“They’re crying because their diapers need changing, but guess what? We’re out! So keep your mouth shut and watch them while I go buy some! The store isn’t close, so I’ll be gone for a while!” she shouted, slamming the door behind her.
Eric continued grumbling as he made his way to the children’s room, still muttering about Cora being a poor homemaker.
An hour passed. The triplets kept crying, but Cora hadn’t returned.
Then, the doorbell rang.
Standing on the porch was a police officer.
For illustrative purposes only.
“I’m sorry to inform you, but your wife was in a car accident. She didn’t survive. We need you to come with us to identify the body. We found her address on her driver’s license.”
Eric stood frozen, his mind struggling to process the words. Shaking, he called their next-door neighbor, Mrs. Nelson, and asked her to watch the children. Then, he left for the mortuary.
Nothing could have prepared him for the sight of Cora’s pale, lifeless body.
Tears streamed down his face as guilt consumed him. The next day, after the funeral, he locked himself away in the house, unable to face the world.
Then, suddenly, he remembered Cora’s gift.
“The gift… I didn’t even open it.”
Frantically, he searched for it, his hands trembling as he unwrapped the box. Inside, he found a letter and two plane tickets to Hawaii.
For illustrative purposes only.
Brushing away his tears, he unfolded the note and began to read.
By the time he finished, he was sobbing uncontrollably. Cora was gone. And nothing could change that.
From that day forward, Eric’s life was never the same. He never fell in love again. Instead, he devoted himself to raising their children, ensuring they had everything they needed.
Every Valentine’s Day, he visits Cora’s grave, spending hours there, pouring his heart out, talking to her about anything and everything, longing for the chance to ask for forgiveness.
